"Female Portraits: Looking Back to the Past" Opens in Bétera to Commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

November 8th, 2024

The exhibition “Female Portraits: A Look at the Past” opened yesterday in the iconic building of the Old Town Hall of Bétera (Vell Ajuntament de Bétera – Calle Mayor, 12). This exhibition, created by the Spanish-Brazilian artist Séfora Camazano, brings together 25 powerful portraits of women of different ages, cultures, and backgrounds who, at some point in their lives, have faced violence or injustice, leading them to transform their destinies.

Inspired by the style and social commitment of the renowned Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla, Séfora pays tribute to the women depicted, presenting them with dignity and elegance. Her work draws from Sorolla’s legacy in the centenary year of his passing, acknowledging the Valencian master for his pioneering role in depicting women in everyday life and various cultural contexts.

The exhibition’s opening was attended by the artist herself, Séfora Camazano, along with some of the women portrayed, lending a deeply personal and emotional atmosphere to the event. Séfora shared insights into her creative process and motivations behind this series, stating, “Art has the power to move and to convey essential messages, beyond the purely aesthetic. This exhibition seeks to provoke thought, inviting the viewer to question the true progress in the perception of women, even in modern times.” The collection serves not only as a visual journey but also as a space for reflecting on the challenges many women continue to face today.

The exhibition is part of the activities organized by the Bétera Town Hall in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25 and will remain open to the public until November 30, 2024.
