Courage

Courage (Coraje) is an artwork by Séfora Camazano. A remarkable mixed media artwork combining photography, digital painting, and traditional hand-brushed finishes. Enhanced with acrylics and a manually applied UV fine art varnish for optimal preservation, it is printed with museum-quality Giclée on 100% cotton, acid-free fine art canvas. Dimensions: 144 x 79 cm. Created in the year 2022, it is part of the “Female Portraits: Looking Back to the Past” collection.

The painting is a portrait of Tuvshinjargal. She is depicted as a milkmaid wearing a white blouse, a handkerchief on her head, horn-rimmed glasses, and a long blue skirt. She stares directly at the viewer. Her chin is resting on her hands, and her elbows are resting on her legs. She is seated on a bed of wild vegetation, where green leaves and multicolored flowers abound, as well as hard branches and thorns. Her bare feet are in direct contact with the ground, and an empty bucket of milk is placed upside down by her side.

Tuvshinjargal had to endure 19 years of gender-based violence at the hands of her husband in Mongolia. When she decided to flee the abuse, she had to leave her 8-year-old daughter behind as she was unable to obtain permission from her husband to take her along. Tuvshinjargal arrived in a foreign country with her two sons aged 18 and 16, to start a new life in a safer place.

“Courage” is the hallmark of Tuvshinjargal, who ended an abusive marriage and started over in a new country thousands of miles away.
